I have a new pool with a cartridge filter system. Do I need to backwash a cartridge filter system?
Question:I believe you have to with a sand filter, but I'm not sure about a cartridge filter. Any help would be greatly appreciated... also does anyone know how much I should backfill around the sides around an aboveground pool?
Answers:
You don't backwash cartridge filters... to clean them you take them out and hose the dirt off, or soak it in a cleaner solution when it becomes necessary (when hosing alone doesn't do it anymore...)
You should have a soft base (sand) inside the pool sides to protect the liner, you don't need outer back fill, unless you have buried part of the pool. If the pump has a backwash selection, then you can assume it will work with the cartridge.
Cartridge filters are not "backwashed". Instead you remove the filter from the casing and hose it with a strong steam frequently. Also, you can purchase a product to spray on it before hosing that will loosen the dirt. Soaking it in a bath with a cup of dishwasher soap overnight and hosing well when it gets too dirty to get clean with a hose is also an inexpensive way to clean the filter.
Rick and Mike are right, you don't need to backwash the filter.
