Answers:
What kind of system do you have?
Heat pump? The black wire may be the reversing valve. If you have a heat pump, there should be an "O" terminal on the T-Stat, unless the T-Stat is not intended to be used with a Heat Pump.
Gas furnace with A/C? The black wire may be the RC lead. REMOVE THE JUMPER BETWEEN R & RC BEFORE YOU HOOK UP THE BLACK WIRE, OR YOU WILL SHORT THE TRANSFORMER.
Does the T-stat take/need batteries? (the r/rc supplies A/C power, battery supplies backup DC power)
Is the T-stat setting calling for cooling? Slide the selector switch to cool or auto, and push your temperature set point down.
To test the system:
(the T-stat controls 24 to 29 volts A/C power. Use care and don't let the current flow through your body)
Take a small wire and jump R to G. Does the fan come on?
Jump R to Y. Does the cooling come on?
R to W will bring the heat on.
It is not uncommon to have a new T-stat come out of the box defective.
Some new T-stats have a long delay (2-5 minutes) to call for cooling. Are you giving the system enough time to respond?
1 Input voltage
2 neturnal
3 Normal Open
4 Normal closed
5
6 speed
7 speed
8 speed
all connect
The black wire is your comm. on from the transformer. Kill power by means of the emergency switch, verify at the furnace that it is going to 'C' or the transformer itself and install on tstat accordingly. Restore power and test. You should be good.
