Filling and treating a pool?

Question:ok new home has an inground pool, however it has recently been cleaned and emptied, we have to fill it with city water via hose, apparently where I live in Florida there are no water delivery companies like I have used in the past. How long to fill up and treat and basically how long from start to finish before able to use the pool? I have just never filled them that way before and not completely sure how to do it.

Answers:
Hello mom of four. I am also a mom of four. First of all, if you're using city water, contact the billing department and tell them you're filling a pool, give them the number of gallons and they might possibly adjust your bill to reflect the water usage only. Sometimes they will bill your sewer charges based on the number of gallons of water that you use. This way you pay only for water. Now on with the filling and treating. Don't know how big your pool is, ours is about 15000 gallons and took 4 or 5 days to fill. We allowed the kids to swim as it was filling, tap water is clean, right? A new pool will go 4 or 5 days without any chemicals before it starts to grow algea, better off to add chemicals as soon as it is full though, preventing algea is much easier than getting rid of it. Add some PH increaser or decreaser to balance according to test strips. Then about 3 bags of shock with stabilizer, wait about 30 mins., test chlorine level with test strips, add more shock if needed, use stabilized chlorine tablets in skimmer to maintain chlorine level. If your chlorine level is good, you should only to have to wait 15 - 30 mins. after adding shock before swimming, according to package directions.

First check with your local fire dept. In some areas, like mine, they will fill it for you. The kids in the neighborhood think it is the coolest thing. If they don't. Use your own water. When it is full turn your pump on asap. Bring a sample of you water to a pool store and they will tell you what to add and when to add it. It isn't possible to give you a time frame because I don't know how big your pool is. I am guessing you could be swimming by this weekend, Good luck.
