How do I paint over a wood fireplace mantle that is painted has been painted with a black glossy finish? Thank

Question:I'd like the new paint to be off white.

Answers:
Its pretty easy to do. Go to your local paint store and buy a primer. If you can get Benjamin Moore it's called fresh start. Prime the entire mantle wait for it to dry and then you can paint your mantle any colour you want.

You'll need several coats. Start with a heavy duty primer like "Kilz". Sand in between coats. What kind of paint you use depends on what is beneath it. Oil-based lacquer? Latex? Try to stick with the same.

You might also try removing the previous paint job. That will be much more work, and the stuff smells awful. Start with a small unseen area and see how easily it comes off.
USE A REALLY GOOD THICK HEAT RESISTANT PRIMER THEN RECOAT WITH UR PAINT IF CHOICE..
Yup that's what I did. Get some liquid sandpaper or something to remove the shine. Then cover with Bin sealer or whatever the store brand is, let it dry well. Cover with your paint. (deglosser)
