I'm screeding my conservatory floor and need to bring it up 300mm?

Question:what would be the best way to do this? i was going to lay 200mm insulation and 100mm screed. any sugestions?

Answers:
the most cost effective way is the following

lay hardcore at 80mm and compact using a vibrating plate, cover the hardcore with a thin sand blinding of 15mm and also compact using the vibrating plate

this will give a total depth of 95mm, make sure it is perfectly level at this stage

cover the total floor area with visqueen sheeting to stop any damp penetrating through, make sure this comes up the wall to at least the height of the finished floor

on top of the visqueen lay 100mm polystyrene insulation and then 100mm concrete

this will give a total depth of 295mm

leave the concrete to cure at least a week and then you can lay a thin layer of latex self levelling screed 5 mm thick to make up any additional height required

this will give a total depth of 300mm

you must add a couple of coats of PVA bonding agent to the concrete floor prior to laying the latex screed, the first coat apply the day before you lay the screed to allow it to soak into the concrete and form a seal and the second coat an hour before you mix the screed, this will form a key for both surfaces to bond together

if you don't want to have the floor insulation simply add more hardcore to make up this depth

an alternative way is not to have the hardcore but to screed on top of the concrete with a 80mm thick sand and cement screed mixed at 3:1 mix, 3 parts screeding sand to 1 part cement but you will have to be good at screeding or know a floor screeder to get a good quality finish using this method

everything you require should be available from most builders merchants, ring around for the best quotation

hope this helps

thanks

you'll only need 70mm of insulation at the most, and 50mm of screed, try putting in concrete first (180mm)
concrete first(280mm), then 20 mm of latex screed..& NO insulation.
You have a golden oppertunity to install underfloor central heating.Lay damp-proof membrane, then insulation then plastic pipe suitably pegged, and finally 4-6 inches of concrete. I have met so many people who have regretted getting it done.
your idea is fine just remember to lay a visqueen damp proof membrane under insulation and lapping up your walls to prvent damp rising from below
You are asking the wrong question, to bring a floor up by 300mm you are laying a new floor, is the existing floor strong enough to take the weight? Are you going to bury cables and pipes for ever? Will it need DPC? Will it mean taking 300mm off doors? Will you be banging your head as you go through a new doorway? Think again Dick Whittington, you may be Lord Mayor material but not a clever builder...
