Is a underlayment really nessesary for a Koi pond?

Question:I have clay like soil in my area and it's not really rocky. What are (if any) other benefits other then extra puncture protection for the liner? I just don't want to spend more money then I have to, but I don't want to have to buy another liner because I didn't spend the extra to protect the first one.

Answers:
Yes, You do need sand or the like to go under the liner. The sand will prohibit rocks and small plants from growing under and damaging the liner.
