My swamp cooler motor keeps shutting off? What could be wrong with it?

Question:The pulley is not too tight and the fan spins easily. I used WD-40 on the wheels. The electric motor gets too hot to touch.

Answers:
the motor is thermally protected means when motor gets too hot it opens a breaker inside the motor. when motor cools down it will come back on. check the v-belt for cracks, slick sides on belt, the belt should ride about half way on motor pulley. if not adjust pulley, so belt will ride in middle. look for oil ports on motor one on each end . use 20w oil only 5 drops on each port. good luck.

Just off the top of my head I would the electric motor is overheating and shutting off, probably for safety reasons.
Mmm, I'm not sure, but in the meantime while your swamp cooler is down, you could put a bucket of ice in front of a regular fan--it has a similar effect as the swamp cooler.
Here are sites that talk about swamp cooler maintenance, maybe they will help you out:

Good luck! I love my swamp cooler and I would be very sad if it were broken!
all motors get old and burn up it may be time to replace yours
if the motor is screaming hot than its on its last leg time for a new motor
