Light Switch Wiring, see details please.?

Question:I am installing a new light switch, tried to use common sense but am stuck. I have limited knowledge.

Details:
3 wires (black, red, and white)
red and white have volatge (120) I measured with multimeter.
This is my 5th or so switch no problems with others

This new switch I'm replacing works in conjunction with another switch which is actually two switches. I have not touched the dual switch at all, only replacing the single switch on other side of room so far.

I keep getting the new switch to work (but not the dual switches, or I get the new switch to stay constantly on).

Can someone please tell me what I should do?

New switch has 2 screws on side which states "black wires only" and it has a ground connection on bottom. Any help much appreciated.

Answers:
The switch you are attempting to install is a 4 way.
You need a 3 way.
When you have it, the box it comes in will have instructions.

If you have the old switch look at it and make sure you bought the same kind. It sounds to me like you need a 3 way switch. If you switch the position of the dual switch, and then check voltage at the new one and find that red and white does not read a full 120 volts but now black does You most definitly need a 3 way switch.. The directions for wiring a 3 way can be found on the web,.I hope this helps,My best advice is have a good working knowledge of electricity before taking on rewiring jobs... and Please kill the power! and then work it like its hot.
