I have been broken in to repeatedly, what kind of traps can I set to deter them?

Alarms, good outside lighting, good locks, are all good advice. Here are a couple of more things that you can try.

Go to Radio Shack or Home Depot and purchase those timers that can control your table lamps and other things like a TV or stereo. Actually purchase one for the lamps and one for another item like the TV. Program them to go on/off at different times.

If you can tell that they have been coming in through a particular window, plant cactus and other 'sticky, sharp' plants under that window or in a heavy planter below it.
Place mousetraps on the inside part of that window or at anyplace they would reach into as they are trying to climb into a window.

If you have a good friend or neighbor that you trust, have them check on your house from time to time while you are gone.

See if the local police will do a zone check in your area. Where I live, they will. They basically do a drive by several times a day to make sure nothing is happening around your house. Sometimes the zone check lasts for a week, sometimes longer.

Hang a cowbell just inside a doorway, so that when a door is opened, the door brushes past it and it rings. I have one at my carport door, just inside. I always know when anyone is going in/out, when I'm home. Even when I'm not home, the closet two neighbors can hear that bell when I'm not around. It doesn't bother them. But sometimes sound can deter a would-be thief.

An alarm system... even if it's a cheap device you place on a door or window... and a big domerman wouldn't hurt either!
get a home security cam. the kind that plugs in to your VCR and every time you leave hit the record button and when you have the thief on tape go to the police and your trouble will be over [you can hide the cam just about any place and no body will know they are being recorded] i have one and caught the thief that was stealing my lawn chairs, he is in jail for 6 months
The best deterrent is a good door and a good lock set. If it takes more than a couple of minutes to break in they will go on to an easier place.

Get an alarm system and a dog.
Security lights and even a cheap alarm system could help. Don't use a "trap" that could hurt someone or you may find yourself paying doctor and hospital bills. No trespassing signs also help to seal legal loopholes. More secure locks may deter thieves.
dogs are good, but what if i put a sedative in a ribeye and wait an hour? ur dogs asleep like a baby. use a double sided dead bolt with a steel reinforced door and a steel door frame. buy a laserline alarm system (new to market can be bought at major hardwood stores) easy to install loud as hell and no monthly fee.
Place stickers and a sign in your lawn telling you have an alarm. Most alarms are useless. The crooks know they they can get in and out before the law get there so if they set one off not knowing it was there then they go ahead anyway. If you let them know you have one, even if you don't they are less likely to hit your home. Be careful about traps. Even if a crook breaks in your home, if you set a trap and they get hurt they can sue you! I know it isn't right but it happens. Good locks and window locks work great. Make it hard for them to get in. A dog is the best weapon. Crooks hate a barking dog! Also, when a home has been broken into more than a couple of times, Look at your so called friends. It will be someone you know. Someone who know where you are and what you have.
I think I read a novel with the same plot.
If you believe they will come back, then you need to set not a trap but a recording system.
You say it happens repeatedly, HOW do they get in ? If through a door, CHANGE the locks, or add a new one.
If you think they are picking locks, fitt 4, and leave 1 unlocked, then they aleways lock 1 themselves.
Do you have an Ex partner might have a copy of the keys ? Have you changed locks since you moved in ? Always first thing you should do if you move home, is fit new locks / extra locks. At least 1 lock on any door should be a dead-lock, so they can't use the old plastic strip trick they learn off films.

If you want to catch them on tape you are going to have to have the VCR unit somewhere they won't find it.

If you live in a "house" fit lights all sides with infrared sensors to turn on with movement, if they are going to be seen , they think twice.

Have a look online at the network video cameras, like a webcam but connect on a standard network cable digitally, so can be placed further from PC with thin cabling. Ask local police to look at house with you to advice on better security to help STOP entry. Extra locks on windows are cheap compared to peace of mind they give.

If you have a cellar that can be accessed from house and outside have you double checked THIS is fully secured ?
where do you live? in colorado we have a law "Make My Day" if you are on your property and feel as though your life or your family's life is in danger, you can blow the SOB away, and have no repercussions, just make it look like you are gone and wait for them to come back, im sure you will get the point accross.
Pungi sticks and Botulin toxin.

God Bless
You can't set a trap where someone will get hurt. No matter what, your liable.
Go to Wal-Mart and buy there inexpensive video cam and hook it up to your T.V. and recorder when your not home. Cover the red light, they have an internal light, with black electricians tape. Several of these can be hooked together and connected to the T.V. when it's off through the recorder.

All you need then is the police to look at it. Remember you are liable if someone is hurt.
A Minnesota farmer, 79 years old got tired of kids breaking into his home while away. In 1978. He set his door with a shotgun. He severely injured one and the judge use him as a reminder to all, the man, although in poor health, got ten years against protests.
