Do I need to apply a primer to new plaster?

Question:We have had plaster boards put up, skimmed over with gypsum plaster. We are now planning to paint with emulsion. Do we need to apply a primer first?

Answers:
It depends on how many coats of paint you want to apply. It's a very porous surface and will suck up a lot of paint. Primer/ sealer will make it a less time consuming job and be cheaper in the long run.

But no you don't have to prime it.

You can emulsion paint straight on to new plaster, it needs to be completely dry, and will probably take three coats dependent on emulsion quality.
New plaster is very absorbent so i would use a primer. It will make painting a lot easier. Also it will seal the plaster , protecting it from little knocks etc.
No you definitely don't need to use primer on new plaster. On your first coat of paint (miss coat)slightly water it down though. After you've done the miss coat you'll notice that there will be lots of little repairs that need doing even though its new plaster. Just need to go round with a filling knife. Final coat can go on neat.
use primer
To protect it yes i would, will save on more that 1 top coat to be applied
