Laying saltillo tiles on cement porch floor?
Question:what kind of mortar/mastic do I use?
thank you.
Answers:
You definetly don't want to use mastic.A good medium grade thinset like c cure 914 or customs versabond will work great and also they allready contain the acrylic additive .Don't forget to use a half inch notch trowel. Also the backs of saltillo's are sunken in the middle.Back trowel in mortar with the flat side of the trowel on the tile then set tile in your mortar bed you will avoid the hollow sound improperly installed saltillo's make.Good luck
Use a regular thin set (brands Mapei and Custom Blend are the best) and mix in a special additive to make it more sticky (can't remember the exact name of it but its usually sold right next to the thin set). Use it fast because it will dry fast in the mixture. Use 1/2 inch X 1/2 inch trowel to lay the thin set.
Also, don't forget to seal the saltillo tile before you lay them because the mortar and grout will stain the tile and it is impossible to get it out. If you are using 12X12 tiles, use a 1/2 inch grout line. Don't forget to seal the tiles and grout lines again after your job is complete.
One method involves soaking the tile in water, thin-setting them raw, grouting them, possibly treating them, then sealing both the saltillo and the grout with a powerful surface sealer. Another method involves using a penetrating sealer, thin-setting, possibly treating them, grouting them, possibly treating them, then sealing both the saltillo and the grout with a powerful surface sealer.
