How can I stop my toilet from running??

Question:Master bath toilet runs excessively. Only way to stop it is to take cover off back and tap the float. What is the issue and how can this be fixed??

Answers:
try cleaning the float of adjusting it

The flap is'nt going down far enough. You might need to change flap or tyhe float .
easy. Find out where your leak is on your flapper. Or replace the whole guts... it is a half a day project for the in experienced.
get a new stopper.
I would try to tighten the bolts on the floor. If that does not help get a good pair of shoes and run along with it....You need to replace all of the internal parts including the flapper. Your local home improvement store should be able to help you. Most instructions are included with the replacements. It is pretty easy to do, good luck.
here is a quick fix from a cook not a plumber. bend the rod the float is on so the float sits lower in the tank . works for me me until i can get a meal prepared for a plumer/handyman friend.
The easiest thing to try first is to make the float shorter, if it's vertical. Try to screw your float clockwise to make it go down farther. You can check to see if it's the float by pulling up on the float. If the water stops running, when you pull up on it, you'll know the problem is in the float. If your float arm was horizontal you could turn it counter clockwise to make it longer, or bend the arm.
you need a new flapper, these are made of rubber and really aren;t meant to last more than a year, you can get one for like $3 at home depot. when you take the old flapper off look at it, it most likely will have a bit of warp to it. new flappers are soo easy to put on, and it will save you tons of water.
just replace all the parts that are inside the tank it's easy and cheap it would save you on that water bill
We did this recently to two of our toilets at home. If you still have a ball float you may need to adjust the chain going from the float to the rubber drain stopper. if your water level in there has changed for any reason (pressure, etc) it won't be sitting right and it will keep letting water in and out. Also your local hardware store has two different kinds of "kits" for the inside of your toilet. There is one that is the whole guts (yep thats what they call it) which has that rubber flapper all the way to the flusher handle. Or you can try the one that is just the rubber flapper to the float. There are ones that don't use the floats anymore as well. Ask an associate and they should be able to help. Hope all goes well.
switch off your bioler i
get model of toilet - buy inside tank replacement parts including stopper that covers the hole in the tank above the bowl. The mass retailers sell universal plastic kits and they will do, but plumbing houses usually sell manufactures parts and they will work better and last longer AND COST MORE. BETTER YET SHUT OFF WATER SUPPLY AND KNOCK ON YOUR NEIGHBORS DOOR.

Then there is Depends
Do u have a softener? If not more than likely hard water build up on your fill valve assembly is causing float assembly to stick. If it is a Fluidmaster, which it sounds like it is, go to Home Depot and buy same model. Turn off water to house preferably at your valve at water meter or the water meter cut off (which the water board hates for you to do). The reason I advise this and not valve behind toilet is that the valve can leak if it is not fairly new causing a whole other issue to deal with. Open hose bibb to relieve pressure in house. Leave open to prevent a problem if cut off valves allow bypass. Flush toilet to drain tank. reach down near base of fill valve in toilet and locate plastic slip ring. Slide this ring up, this unlocks top assembly of fill valve. The top half of fill valve should come straight up and off of shank easily.Install top half of new fill valve ensuring plastic slip ring is locked into place when you have fill vale at proper height. Turn water on to house. The reason I suggest doing it this is to avoid disturbing supply line and valve which could lead to more repairs to be made and parts to replace.
Hire a plumber FAST! I let mine run for about a year not thinking much of it and got a $3000 water billl from the city of New York.
A plumber would've saved me a huge headache and much of my savings.
