I need plans for an inside ramp with a 5" step down starting the incline. could someone help me?
Question:i am homebound and had one made but it is breaking due to the wrong incline and the weight of my wheelchair. thank you
Answers:
the ramp should be at least 5 feet long (1:12 incline) even better would be 8 feet long if you have the room. If I had to make a ramp, I would use two pieces of 2x2 steel angle iron set apart the width you need and fill the gap with diamond plate aluminium. Cut the angle a few inches from the end through one side so that it can be bent to sit on the top of the step and then angle down. use at least three bolts on each side to hold the plate to the steel.
Ramps always consume a lot of space. I wouldn't recommend starting it with a step, though. If the present ramp is breaking, that's because it's too weak, not too steep. Why would you want a 5" step at the top? Can you negotiate that with your wheelchair? I occasionally do ramps for public places, and the maximum slope is 1 in 12. That's often more than the space available in a house. If you want to contact me, feel free. Need more info, though.
