I've found carpenter ants in my apt. What's the best solution I can find at the hardware store?

You can't get it at the hardware store - but give them dry grits. (Are you in the south?) Anyway - they take them back to the rest of the ants and when they eat them they swell inside of the ants and kill them. That's what we put on ant beds where I live - I swear it's better than bug spray!
I agree with the first one, Terro is the best to kill them.
i have been having a problem with ants myself. make sure you keep your source of water from dripping, nothing left soaking in the sink and put cinnamon down in their pathway. they won't cross it. they hate cinnamon.
if you must get something from the hardware store, get ant traps. they are safer for the environment.
The best thing would be to locate the nest or nests where your ants are coming from. This would be rotting wood, like a sick tree, or lumber in the building that's getting wet from a leak or something. Carpenter ants build their nests in wet, rotting wood. It's easier to burrow in.
You can locate the nest by following ants around. You might have to do this at night with a flashlight, I think I remember reading they're more active at night. I looked into this a few years back when I had a case of these things. They were living in a tree in the front yard.
If you can locate the nest(s), you can poison it out completely. It would be good to have the leak and lumber repaired or keep treating the tree periodically after that, or cut it down.
Seems like the apt owners/managers should have something to do with this.

you gotta nail the queen or queens as you see workers and the hive is a lot bigger than some workers. If you can get chlordane you are in like flint otherwise heir an exterminator. Seems big brother won't allow us citizens the proper chemicals to rid ourselves of these pest.
Go to a drug store and ask for powdered boric acid. It is safe for all life forms (it's found in eye wash) except for insects. They like the stuff and bring it back to the nest. It is very humane and it really, really works.
