Carpenter bees?

Me and kids used a tennis raquet and a tube of caulk. worked great and was great fun.
keeping wood surfaces painted or finished (not just stain like on a deck) is the best defense. They can destroy things like the facia boards on your house. All they need is a little crack in the paint and they are in. If they get in, watch them as they enter and either spray some bug spray in the hole or be cruel and take a 1/2 inch dowell rod, saw off a little, and push that into the hole and they will die in there.
Buy a can of hot-shot. You need to get them where they nest and that can shoot into the hole and get them. They are not very aggressive and quite easy to eradicate. I had some in the old shed and they bored into the rafters. Took me less than an hour to get all of them with a can of that stuff.
Wait until dusk when all the carpenter bees have returned to their nest and then spray them. Repeat a few times over the next several days and finally seal the wood to prevent rehabitation.
