Polyurethane drying time?

Question:I want to pour a 1/2 inch coat of polyurethane over my table and inbed some items inside. How long will it take to dry? Shold I pour in layers? will pouring in layers leave lines in the clar coat. Should I use something else instead of polyurethane?

Answers:
I would expect this to take quite some time to dry, possibly a couple of years to fully cure. Not kidding. The poly will form a dry crust on the top in a couple of days, sealing the liquid below. The liquid beneath will not get any air, it will take a long time for the solvents to permeate the crust and cure.

Pouring in layers would work if you had a perfectly clean environment. Any dust will appear as bubbles in the finish. Does not take much to be a problem.

I can't think of the name of the product, but there is a two part acrylic mix that would be perfect for this. It cures by a chemical reaction between the two parts, so not having air will not be an issue. Some sort of epoxy may be useful for the same reason. I will check my bookmarks in a bit and update if I find anything.

Update -- Didn't take too long. Do a search for 'acrylic casting resin'. See http://www.smooth-on.com/liqplas.htm... for one supplier -- scroll down to the Crystal Clear series. There are other suppliers so check around.

That would take forever to dry. I wouldn't advise it. We put it on our cabinets, (I work at a cabinet factory) and it takes a long time just for a coat to dry. I don't think you'd get lines if you tried the layering thing, but I would think a few bubbles would appear. I think if I were you wanting to do this project, I'd make, or have made, a rail around you table made to fit a piece of glass with your things setting under it.
B-alert nailed it w/ the Resin... u can get it any craft stores... I used it on the top of my table. It pours like molasses & u have to make sure that there is NO dust stirring around it b/c any particles will settle in it esp for such a big space. I tried to have newspaper of it propped up to keep as mch off it. It's really fun to use but can b a mess if u pour 2 mch.

I did it on a plaster piece one time that i was painting... it was a old vintage shoe that was like a vase.. so i made the leather look like pante-leather.. it was a mess.. but it came out sooo kewl.

Ck. the craft stores or even online at http://www.michaels.com or http://www.joanns.com or http://dickblicks.com

it will b mch better than coats of poly.
