How do I turn off the water heater tank ?
Question:I live in Florida and during Summer I do not need hot water. I want to save electric bills, how do I turn it off ? The electric Braker does not have any label, and I just went to flip the switch OFF, but could not tell. Besides I do not want to turn off gas range or AC, etc..Just water heater.
Answers:
Just flip a breaker - any breaker. Find out what it controls and then label it with a Sharpie pen. Do this until all breakers are labeled. This way you solve 2 problems at once - heater is off and all breaker switches are labeled for future use. Your water heater runs off 220 volts and will be a dedicated breaker, that is if it's not gas fired. If the H2O heater is gas just turn off the gas to the heater. There will be a valve. Hope this helps.
Is is gas?
If so, turn the top knob to 'pilot', depress slightly, then continue turning it to 'off'.
If it's electric, by 2003 code, it's supposed to have a disconnect near the water heater. But chances are, you'll have to flip the breakers until you find the one that serves it.
firstly, is your hot water heater electric or gas? If its electric and you do not know the breaker for the hot water heater shut them all off. ! You can put in a inline shut off (get a box, light switch, wall plate). cut the electrical lead to the hot water heater.attach the white wires to the silver nuts, pigtail the black and green wires. If you are uncertain about what you are doing get a certified electrician,! this is a simple job and should not cost too much.
Water heaters are typically 220v 30amp. Look in your breaker box for a double circuit breaker marked 30. There may be two or three, but this should help you narrow it down.
