Use lime in rendering an outside wall?

Question:I'm about to render an outside wall and have been told I should add some lime to the float coat as it rubs up nicely. But then don't use a plasticiser?

Answers:
The proper way to do this is to put a bucket of lime to a mix of 5 parts sand 1 part cement for your scratch coat with waterproofer additive guaged out (roughly 30-1).
On the fine down coat just use feb and if you want to add a shovel full of lime in just to help it pick up - too much and you have a job on your hands as it will be drying too quick and may crack.

In the olden days they never used to use feb or waterproofer, just Lime.
If you are confident, then the old way of 5-1-1 will work lovely.
Have fun

my partnerhas his own company called brick doctors so i asked him your question and this is his reply:
i recommend that you should put plenty of pva into scratch coat and top coat .rubs up Nicol and stops any cracking whilst drying and when dry .allows expansion and shrinkage in hot and cold weather conditions.it worked for me.on my own house.
hey if it is for an extention and you want it to match the rest of the house feel free to e-mail me. GOOD LUCK!!!
