Painting a Mailbox?
Question:I need to paint a large steel mailbox. How would I go about removing the paint and what would I use for a new coat.
Answers:
If it's flaking, use a metal brush (like a grill brush) to remove it. If the paint is in good shape - just faded or whatever, don't remove it. Just paint over it. Use an enamel outdoor spray paint. Krylon is a good brand, but the store brands are just as good and about half the price.
If it has rust on it, use the metal brush and then spray with a rust-proof primer, then paint as usual.
I think you got your best answer in the one above, exactly what I was going to recomend! Good Luck!
unless it's rusted or the original paint is flaking off, you don't need to do much other than spray paint over it! just make sure you clean it really good before re painting. use a brush to scrape at areas that are flaking and a wire brush for areas that are rusted. good luck! have fun!
A paint job is only as good as the preparation of the surface. After you've scraped or brushed off the loose paint, sand the surface smooth. Anything you can "feel" by wiping your hand across the surface will show through the new paint.
Use some steel wool to get down to bare metal, and then paint or spray and rust type of paint should last longer theres lots of colors to choose from
I respect recycling but think of time and paint materials
if price is an issue consider replacing with a plastic one... they are very inexpensive and won't rust and if someone comes along with a baseball bat you lose little.
