As others have said, sand with the grain. If these are painted boards and you can't see the grain, it will be running the long dimension of the board.

Sand with the grain of the wood its the most effective and smoothest way. You will not get any lines when you sand with the grain.
In case you don't know what the "grain" is it is the lines in the wood. Go the same direction as the lines. Not against them. So I guess to answer your question.. parallel with the lines in the wood. Hope this helps.
