What kind of plug is on this oven?
Question:I have an oven someone gave me but the plug appears much larger (not standard). I don't know if I have that kind of outlet where I am taking the oven. If I only have a standard outlet, will I not be able to plug it in?
Answers:
the plug end on the stove is for 220 volts, if you don't see a socket that it fits into, call an electrician to run a 220 line for the stove
The plug on the stove that you have is either a 3 or 4 wire plug, but every stove is 220 volts, and the ground prong on your plug is straight. On a dryer, which looks similar to a stove plug, the ground is shaped like a L. You are going to have to run at least 50 amp wire to an outlet that you are going to have to put it. They make flush and surface mount plugs, so its really up to you. Its going to be behind your stove, so nobody is really going to see it anyway. Most people use 6-3 SEU Aluminum for stove wire if this helps.
All electric stoves are 220 volt but there have been changes in code or what plug is more standard over the years. If you are sure the used oven you have is in good working order you should be able to find the male cord end you need at a local hardware store to fit into the socket where you are taking the oven. You could try an appliance dealer that takes in old stoves, they might have a used cord from an old stove that fits the one you have . If you get a pigtail, "short end of cord with a plug on it" it is very simple to hook up to the stove under the back cover.
All are 220/240, but often local codes dictate the type of outlet . You will need to replace the cord on the range to one that will fit your existing outlet. Just draw a picture of the outlet to include all the holes and the angles--can even lightly trace the face plate with a paper and pencil-- and take it to any hardware or home center or any appliance store and they can sell you a cord that will fit your electrical outlet. Common problem, especially with dryers, but often with ranges.
You need to have someone look at the requirements of the stove to ensure the stove is installed properly it's not just the plug but the amps and wire size that need to be looked at to ensure safe operation.
