How do I make a tie-dye shirt?
Question:I love the way they look but when I try to make them, they never come out right.
Any advice would help.
Also: I plan on starting with a plain white cotton t-shirt.
Thank you =]
Answers:
Have three different colors of Rit dye; (your choosing)
Tie rubber bands around the shirt in three different places or make knots out of the shirt (with rubber bands)(very tight) Dip first color start at top. Hold shirt so top part doesn*t get wet and do the second part, then do the bottom. Hope this helps. If you want better instructions Google ; tie dye shirts.
Good Luck
You can look for tie die kits on ebay or at local craft stors or on amazon.com. A kit is better because your colors don't get messed up as easily
Use RIT liquid dye. The stuff from kits are overpriced crap. Use the hottest water possible, in buckets.don't use the washing machine. The boldest, long lasting colors come from a secret...use shavings of Ivory soap in every dye that you prep. (I swear by this!! Get a potato peeler from the dollar store) Buy different widths of rubber bands to experiment with, and always wrap these as tight as possible. Let your work soak for a long time (like an hour if you are only using one color.) Add more boiling water from a tea kettle if water becomes too cooled off.
My favorite works are made by folding technique. Fold shirt or other in specific ways (like basic flag fold) before tying rubber bands on. Can also be rolled or bunched. These are the ways you get your pattern to "repeat". This is an excellent way to do sheets and drapes.
***I was addicted to tye-dyeing when I was younger. Once I preserved 6 colors of dye in 5 gallon buckets (in the bathtub) for three days and dyed everything thast wasn't nailed down. My mother flipped out, but various members of the family STILL have some of the coolest sheets in town. (Mostly my brother, who refuses to give up a set.)
You soak the shirt in warm water with urea for 20 min. wring out the shirt you want it moist but not dripping wet, lay the shirt out flat where you want the center of the spiral with a fork or your fingers start twisting up the shirt like spaghetti. Remember the tighter the better once you have the shirt tightly twisted apply the dye in wedges like pizza cuts, be careful not to apply to much dye. Before you open the shirt while it is still tightly twisted rinse off lose dye with water.
Here is the best site that I could find regarding tie dying. Have fun.
