concrete it
I find that the only way to keep them out is pulling them out.
I have heard that if you cover the dirt area where of course all the weeds are coming up with grass clippings from your mower will prevent them. So start saving your grass clipping and spread them in the garden. Its cheap and also environmentally friendly!
We use thick (4.5 mil) black plastic sheeting purchased from home depot. It's 20'x100'. Cut holes in it for your plants. We have a 2 acre garden and it makes weeding it so easy. You only have to do it around your plants.
I use mulch about 4 inches deep instead of chemicals in both my vegetable and flower gardens. It's cheaper and much healthier for your soil, your plants and the enviroment PLUS you'll be watering less because it helps keep the soil moist longer. Pull up as many of the weeds as you can then spread the mulch out over the entire garden, not just right around the plants, extending out about a foot from the outer plants. Then give the whole garden a really deep watering *stick your finger down through the mulch to make sure the soil is wet not just the mulch* Good luck with your gardening :)
You can do many things none will realy be 100%. What my family does is During the 1st or second weekend of march is we put lemo jucie as well as lime jucie in the top layer of soil and that helps a good part with the weeds.
The wife uses Preen, it is not an immediate solution but regular applications seem to keep the flower beds virtually weed free.
