What's the best/easiest way to refinish a bedroom suit?
Question:I was given a nice bedroom suit, but I'm not really happy with the color of the wood. I would like to restain it a darker color. What would be the best way to go about doing this?
Answers:
Polyshades, by Minwax, is the easiest way to darken a finish. In my shop I would scuff the finish, glaze or alcohol stain, then lacquer over with a tinted lacquer in a spray booth; you don't have that kind of set up. Polyshades incorporates both finish AND color in one step. Add more coats to deepen the color. And unlike the previous answer it does look good, and is perfect for beginner-level finishers.
You will have to remove the finish, either by sanding, or stripping. Then you can apply the stain of your choice. I would buy several shades of the color you like, and experiment on the back, or in a place hidden. Then you can re-finish. The best finishes take weeks to apply, and are natural oils, but you also said easiest. Those poly-whatevers are pretty easy, if you enjoy the smell of a refinery.
Give the wood a good sanding. Remove all the dust. Go to your improvement store and look at all the samples of stain and choose your favorite.
