Knocking noise when flushing toilets?
Question:I hear knocking noise whenever I flush toilet. It doesn't matter whether the toilet is on the first floor or the 2nd floor. Also, knocking noise occurs when water drains from clothes washer that's on the first floor. Do PVC drain pipes make knocking noise? I thought it was a strictly a copper pipe problem. Thanks for your help!
Answers:
you need a surge dampener to reduce the pressure slightly... or increase the outlet size/unclog pipework.
cheers
What you are hearing is called water hammer. If the system is properly designed there should be expansion chambers built into your system. They may have become 'Water clogged', the easy fix will be to shut off the water and open all facets and the lowest out side facet on your home. This will allow the water to drain from the expansion chamber and provide the 'cushion' needed to prevent water hammer.
I have a vibration in my water pipes, sounds like knocking at times. it means there is to much water pressure in the lines. I will turn on a facuet for a little bit to relieve the pressure, that normally makes it go away.
If the knocking occurs during re-pressurization of the device following the emptying of water, you need an expansion chamber on the supply side. If it's the drain "cycle," you're vent system is probably plugged. Check your vent pipes for bird's nests, etc, or if you have a master vent pipe, that it hasn't slipped it's support, and no longer has the proper slope. "Water hammer' is an issue with hot water when it is at boiling water temperatures and can expand to steam due to a condition that causes reduced pressure. The resulting expansion shakes pipes.
