Refinishing a Dresser?

Question:I have 2 pieces that need different treatments I think. One is a red 3 drawer chest that has at least 4 coats of various paints on it. It is a family antique, but has been painted in the last 20 years and looks horrid. Should I start with stripper on somehting that has that many coats of paint?

Also have a 6 drawer dresser I got for free that I am useing for baby clothes, painted a pale brown, but i cna see where the paint has come off and it has a dark stain underneath it. Is it possible to strip off paint w/o harming the finish underneath?

Answers:
As for the antique, as already mentioned, it is a job for a pro. The dresser can be stripped. The stripper will most likely remove the finish under the paint, but not the stain. Simply re-finish with your favorite oil, or one of those horrid, poly-something, done in an hour, stink up the shop, finishes

I would use a sander on both. It will go faster. If you want you can get your own dark stain to put on it.
HAVE A PRO DO THE ANTIQUE. AS FOR THE OTHER IT REALLY DEPENDS ON THE TYPE OF PAINT.GIVE IT A SHOT
