How to make an inexpensive chalk board.?
Question:I am thinking that I can take showerstall material board (bought from Home Depot in 4'x8' sheets for less thab $20.00) sand it, then paint it with chalk board paint. Will this work?
Answers:
Sure, that works. But, the chalks today are really hard and wear out the paint real fast. You can still find the rare soft chalk, now and again, mostly for sidewalks.
Life has moved on to dry-erase markers, like it or not. Works great on the stove, heard it's really tough to get off of refrigerator surfaces. Glazed surfaces are best with dry erase markers. Don't see why you couldn't lacquer just about any surface and use markers instead of chalk.
Yes this will work fine. Get about a 200 grit sandpaper and use your 20 dollar palmsander ( like a dvd, don't we all have one by now?) and sand the backside of the masonite showerboard. Buy the most durable that you can afford. Ideally if you can get an aluminum frame to go around it at some point that would reinforce it. Even a cheap yellow pine frame would stiffen it a bit.
If the chalkboard paint is thick and needs no primer then go for it. Otherwise invest in a can of grey primer and spray the masonite first to fill in the pores. Be sure it dries good before applying the chalkboard paint.
That same shower stall material can be used with dry erase markers! Where I work, thats what we used, works great!, it may be too glossy for the chalk board spray paint tho. Hope I helped!
