How much chlorine do i need to put in my swimming pool?

Well you need to give more basic information. Is your pool 10000 gallons or 25000 gallons? Without knowing how much water we are dealing with it makes this answer very Difficult.

Now are we talking about compressed chlorine sticks or Tablets, or shock chlorine? Shock Chlorine could be Granular or Liquid form.
The best rule of thumb is that you use 1 pound of granular shock for every 10000 gallons, and you round up so if you had a pool with 27000 gallons of water, you want to treat the water for 30000 gallons.

Liquid Shock is the same way. It is approximately 1 gallon of liquid for every 10000 gallons.

You should shock your pool When needed. Most people shock their pool weekly. IF you are a person that is going to have heavy use of your pool on weekends with children or alot of family members, then it would be best to shock your pool after the party and the weekend is over.

As for compressed chlorine that you normally add to the skimmer. IT is not an exact science. Some pools will require 3 tablets a week ,some will only require 2, and some will require 5. there are many factors and its impossible to tell. The only way to properly figure this out is to test your water on a day to day basis. Start with 3 sticks or tablets. If your chlorine level continues to be too high, try 2 the next week. <remember that the chlorine level might be a little high from the extra chlorine you started with> So a gradual decrease to a normal level is fine. If when you drop if to 2 tabs/sticks id drops too low, you might just have to add a half tab/stick... So you just have to take the time to tinker with it to find the right amount that is needed. Again.. there is no exact science to it, and there are many variables. Also if you start noticing that you are getting algae on the walls, then you will want to go with the increased level. that level is obviously too low and is allowing algae to bloom in the water.
A Pool that only gets used by 2 seniors for an hour a day all week long will probably use less chlorine than a pool that has 5 children that use the pool for 6 hours a day.

Hope this information helps you... I answered as best i could without having any information to go on.

Also... lastly... Make sure you check your shock chlorine. IF you are going to be using liquid shock, you wont have any problems but if you have a vinyl liner pool, or a tinted plaster finish on a gunite pool, make sure that if you use granulated chlorine that you first dissolve it in a bucket. IF you let it sit on the bottom, it could weaken your liner, and create pin holes, or on a colored plaster finish it could bleach out the color of the finish. That is why some companies now print that certain granular shocks are for White Plaster pools only...

the people in the pool place can help you with that but it is usually one big yellow cholrine container or two
I use about 2oz per every 1000 gal. per day or every other day.
Since different pools contain different amounts of water, the best advice is to read the instructions on the product label. Have you ever thought of switching to a saline pool rather than using chlorine? I don't sell the product, but I'm planning on having a pool installed and will be using this system because I hate the smell, the burning eyes, the dried out hair and bleached out swimsuits that chlorine causes...not to mention the cost!

Good luck
read the label or the pool info.
Buy a test kit - very simple and easy to use. The kit comes with different solutions and will help you to determine the proper chemical mix for your pool. You should be able to find the kits at Wal Mart or any pool supply store.
