It's a pretty involved job. Whether it's free standing or built in the wall, you need to go to a home improvement store that sells them. If you describe your installation, they can set you up with the right firebox and parts to do the job. When you buy it instructions should be included. This is no small job. It must be done according to codes and recomendations from the manufacturer. If you do not understand, you should hire a pro.

putting in a fireplace is not something you want to try. you will need firebrick and experiance laying brick and making the right size firebox for the chimney. you will not be able to use existing chimney. best left to a pro.
you must be pretty good at diy if your willing to get into a fireplace and chimney brick or rock air vents and all that. try going to a Hearth and Patio, they are pretty helpful. little on the expensive side but they can hook you up right.
Why don't you go to a fireplace shop that specializes in selling and installing fireplaces. Get some ideas, find out what the building codes are, insurance regulations etc.

Building a fireplace is NOT a DIY project unless you have experience.

Improperly build and installed fireplaces can be deadly due to carbon monoxide poisoning and house fires.
