I drilled into my garden wall yesterday and black tar-like stuff came out. What is it?

Question:We're talking about your standard red brick wall here. All the other bricks I tried drilling into seemed fine, it was just this one brick. Anyone know what this stuff may be?

Answers:
Hi it could be a bitumen based damp proof course it is used as a damp proof membrane between layers of brick so the damp cannot penetrate any further up the wall or through the wall you can sometimes see it on older houses when the sun is shining and it heats the stuff up you can see little runs on the wall where the damp course is, hope this helps.
