There is a big old hornets nest?
Question:hanging on the corner of the porch.Its about the size of a basketball. Should I whack it with a great big stick?

Common sense should tell you that this would be a sure way to get the hornets riled up and get you good and stung. Spray it with Hornet killer from a good distance away and then seek shelter. Continue doing this until all the hornets are dead. We had one about the same size in the ceiling of our bathroom and found it when we remodeled. It must have been there for years. Once we got all the hornets out and dead, we donated the hornets nest to the local schools science center. The kids were fascinated to look it over.

if it is , try to keep it in tact and encase it in a glass box... that mite look cool on a table on the porch.If you spray it with the hornet killer, Make sure you do it at night when all the hornets are in there so you get them all, and they wont be able to find you so well to sting you. They will be disoriented at night.
I hate bug spray, but get the hornet spray and spray in the evening when they huddle in for the night so you get them and they don't get you. Really douse it but don't breath too much of the stuff. I would do this for a day or two, then get your stick and whack it unless you want to save it but it's going to be filled with bug spray so I'm partial to just getting rid of it!
Wait until dusk when the hornets wiil probably be asleep. Get some proprietry insect killer spray.
Put something like a scarf round your mouth to minimise breathing in the stuff.
Spray the whole can full all over it and if there is a hole at the bottom as much as you can in it.
Leave it for 24 hrs, if no activity hit it with a great big stick.
Disappear quickly.

these poeple are trying to get you killed! enough hornet stings can do that. one hour after dark all the little bastards will be in the nest. hit it with one whole can of hornet and wasp spray that shoots a stream, not spray. cover the nest as evenly and quickly as possible and get out of there! make sure to soak the entrance hole first. at least 30% of the can should go in there. buy the poison that brags of the most VOLTAGE! this will knock them down in less than one second! dont hit them with light till you are ready to shoot, they cant see in the dark but the light will wake them. good luck, be carefull.
don't be crazy just get a can of spray from the hardware store and spray it at night. when they are gone then you can knock it down. Good luck and be safe.
Call your AG extension agent or local exterminator, do not hit with stick. Or you could do like we did at farm wait until dark and knock it down with high pressure water hose but be sure to have medical help available.
