Can solid hardwood floors be installed over strawboard?

Question:My home was built in 1976 and have subfloors with some sort of black covering adhered to the top. On top of the black covering is strawboard. I would like to install solid hardwood floors on top. Can this be done?

Answers:
No. The nails or staples will not hold. Go with a floating engineered with a thick wear layer. It can be sanded as many times as a solid just about. glue down isn't recommended either on top of straw board because of peeling. If you don't like the wide planks, or the 3ply strip on a floating engineered floor then put Luann or plywood down first and then glue down engineered that would have more varieties.
