You can't mount anything that will bear any weight directly into drywall without an anchor. However, it is much better to mount directly into a stud if possible. If not possible, you will need drywall anchors, which can be found at any home improvement store. Make sure that you use one that is sufficient for the weight that will be on the shelf.
drill a hole in the wall and put these little plastic clamps, then screw into them. They hold the screws in the drywall because they open up. Sorry i can't remember the name of them. Or find a stud and screw into them.
You will have to use a hollow wall anchor such as a toggle bolt this will hold a lot better than just plain screws or plastic anchors. If you are putting alot of weight on these shelves space the anchors about every 12" it may seem like overkill but you should never have to do it again.
These can be found at any hardware store or stores such as a wallmart.
They are called "molly Bolts"..the metal inserts you drill an undersized hole in wall..tap these in with a hammer..then you screw the screw into it..you want molly bolts with at least an inch and a half shaft for maximum strength..
It would be best not to fasten shelves in to dry wall.
It would be best if they were fastened in to the studs.
You can buy a tool that will help locate the studs.
With the screws going in to the wood a least 1 inch this would hold all of the weight that the shelves them self can hold.
In other words the shelve will fail before the screws will.
Using a fender washer (A larger washer with a smaller hole)
between the screw head & the shelve will give it even more holding power.
Use wall anchors, if you are unable to screw them into the wall studs. They are available at any home improvement store.
If you want to try and find the stud, try knocking on the wall. If it an interior wall, if's probably not insulated, and will sound hollow, except when you hit a stud. The stud will sound more dull. You should notice some resistance when you get through the drywall and into the stud, but it will hold your shelves much better than the drywall alone.
