Ceiling Fan or Chandelier?
Question:I am going back and forth regarding a ceiling fan or chandelier in a two story foyer. The total house is only about 1500 sqf just to give some vision. What do you suggest is the best out of the two?
Answers:
chandelier light will make the space appear bigger...
A good ceiling fan adds functionality but a good chandelier adds character and sets the tone for the house. Which is more important to you?
A chandelier definitely. There very elegant in a foyer. A ceiling fan is best used in a room.
I wouldn't know what to do with out my celing fan, it works great at cooling and circulating the air, you could get a pretty one then youd have form and function. GL!
a ceiling fan will help with the cooling and heating a lot of heat will go up to the ceiling and with a good ceiling fan the heat in the winter time can be brought back down to the lower level of the house
If you live in a climate where it is hot in the summer and cold in the winter, you will certainly benefit from the energy savings of a ceiling fan. During the summer and winter months, your ceiling fan can help even out the temparature between your upstairs and downstairs, which is a major benefit.
The only functional benefit a chandelier will have over a ceiling fan is that it might provide more light (depending on the amount of bulbs in your chandelier).
If you are concerned about the decorative appeal of a ceiling fan compared to a chandelier, you will be surprised at how many really decorative ceiling fans there are on the market today. But you will need to venture out beyond your local home center to find great looking fans.
Visit a specialty ceiling fan/lighting dealer, or shop online at one of the ceiling fan and lighting sites that has professionals who can help you make this decision based on other factors that you have not stated, such as the style of the decor, height of the ceiling, space alloted for fixture and how it impacts a stairway (if it does).
get a nice ceiling fan that looks good and flows with the house
I've been an electrician for years, but I've never had someone ask me to install a paddle fan in a foyer. Foyer lights are almost always chain lights (chandelier). But, you're the one who has to live there, so put up whatever YOU like more.
Also, you can't hang a fan on anywhere you want. The box that holds up a fan must be "ACCEPTABLE FOR FAN SUPPORT."
I'm a huge fan of fans, but they are only useful in rooms where you'll be hanging around for awile like bedrooms and living rooms. Hanging a fan in a foyer would be like haginging a fan in a hallway.
a unique and nice chandelier would be great to your home!
A chandelier will look like crap if it gets any dust on it. It's a pain to clean, because after you dust you'll have to clean your fingerprints off of it, and replacing the bulbs can be a bear. Plus, all it does is add light.
Ceiling fans are not as "high class," but they are way more useful, not much harder to install, and way easier to clean. They'll collect dust a little faster when they're in use, and you'll need to dust before you start using them regularly each season... But cleaning is much easier.
Ceiling fans come in all kinds, and can actually look very high class, with fancy globe lighting, or cut glass, or whatever.
Also, fans can be made with many differerent kinds of materials, and combinations of materials, which can really pull a decorative motiff together. A chandelier will always look a little out of sync. It has no wood, it's all classical brass and cut glass. Decorating a room with brass and cut glass will be expensive, hard to keep clean, and will look either chintzy, or ultramodern, and neither of those looks are really in.
I just bought a townhouse, three months ago, which has those ugly, ugly ceiling fans/light in the dining room and bedrooms. I wanted them removed and light fixtures put in their place...until today. It was almost 80 degrees today and am I ever glad I had those fans. Since it is in your foyer, it may very well help circulate the hot air. If you know for sure you won't benefit from the circulation, then I would go with the chandelier. I may try to find some way of painting or finishing the fan blades to make them more attractive but they are definitely staying.
