If you would like to email me and give me an idea where you are we might be able to find a group that will take care of that a/c for you seeing as how your boys have asthma...also a rough idea of what your a/c does when you turn it on...does it come on at all? or just not cool..tvtop_toptv@yahoo.com

well you could go to walmart and get a small window ac, they are around 150- 200. that will help some
Make sure your celing fans are going counter clock wise for fresher feeling in the summer.
First of all, close all of your windows ecept one, leave it open about 3 inches.next make sure your ceiling fans are drawing the air upwards towards the ceiling. If you habe a humidifier, use it as it will remove excess moisture from the air inside your home. If you have a forced air furnace, you can turn on the firnace fan only, the switch will either be locted just inside the panel to the pilot on your furnace or located near your furnce. It looks like a normal light switch.By using your furnce fan you will draw cooler air up from your basement to the rest of your house provided you first open the furnce filter door. The older homes and buildings had flat roofs for a reason, during hot summer months they flooded these type of roofs with water. In doing so, the wayer on the roof evaporated and in this way a very basic refrigeration process is created where as the hot air in your home was drawn quickly outside. You can spray cold water on your roof using a lawn sprinkler with a long hose attached. This will cool your house extremely fast and put goose bumps n your arms. You could also go to your local hardware store and buy some bags of Quick Lime and place them in different locations in your basement. The quick lime will draw out the moisture also.Moisture in your home creates heat, remove the moisture and your home will be cooler and livable.Do not draw air in through open windows as this will also draw in moisture and more heat even at night time when it is cooler outside.Keep those windows closed and during the day, keep your windows covered with dark cloth.
if you cant use window ac form walmart, try a roll around room version they are about $200
best thing i can tell is fans and maybe let some outside air in.
We very seldom use our AC. We close up the whole house ; close any drapes where the sun comes in; Turn on the fan on the furnace (this brings cool air up into the house from the basement) and turn on ceiling fans. At night we turn on our attic fan with a couple of windowns open about 2 or 3 inches.
Works for us. P.S. The more showers you take, the more humidity you are letting into the house.
