What do i use to get scratches off a flute?

Question:i have a flute and i was careless with it when i was younger i found it recently in my attic and i would like to restore it i need to get the bunch of hairline scratches off of it to complete my restoration any ideas that won't hurt my flute

Answers:
You don't. My wife has several flutes, and she will not allow anybody except the factory to polish them. Never allow anyone to buff it. The only proper method is to completely tear it down, and use a special silver polish, by hand. It requires skill, and most won't do plated flutes. Let's not even discuss the care of 24K head joints!

What's your flute made of? Brass? If so, you can chrome it again, if not, try rubbing off the scratches with a very light rubbing compound.
