I damaged my dining room table.?
Question:I had put newspapers down on my dining room table and was using glue on a craft project- I was so careful not to spill but some of the glue dripped without my knowing and soaked into the newspaper and dried. When I went to pick up the paper it took a chunk about the size of a dime out of the table top! The gouge is down to the bare wood. Is there something I can do to make this less noticeable or do I need to get a professional? We've only had this table a short while- it's such a shame! I feel just sick about it.
Answers:
find a wood-working store. they have a variety of wood fillers they come in different colors to match the wood.home depot has natural colored wood fillers, but youll still need a wood-working store for stain markers
If it is coated with poly or epoxy then you can go to the local home depot and get a small jar (and prep supplies) to patch. It should blend pretty good.
You need a professional. Because of the wood is now exposed, and this is a dining room table, lots of liquids will spill, and the wood may tend to deteriorate, and the hole will get bigger. If it's not so expensive, try and take it to a pro, so he can re paint your table.
First thing we need to know is what type of top coat was used.
Does the wood itselft looked damaged?
If you only peeled off the top coat it can be repaired yourself depending on the type of top coat. If we can get an idea of what it is I can give you some suggestions on how to go about it.
stain the damaged section to match. pour varathane in depression till almost flush; let dry,,, lightly sand. brush on following coats. More less noticeable? varathane entire table. Good luck
This can be repaired by a professional, but they will probably use stripper to take the whole color and varnish off and restain and varnish it. In the mean time, you can get one of those felt tip markers made to hide such spots from most hardware stores for about 3 or 4 dollars. Get the color for your wood. Just dab it on. You won't see it everytime you walk through the room after that. At least you'll feel better.
