Plunging a toilet?
Question:Our toilet is clogged and I've never plunged one before. Do you have to turn the water off, or wait til it goes down on it's own, and will it go down on it's own? I have the water off right now and the bowl is almost empty of water. What next?
Answers:
Put some water in the bowl, usually enough for a normal water level. You don't have to be too energetic with the plunger...just make sure it's seated securely against the porcelain of the bowl, and push down firmly, then pull up firmly. Repeat, until you can tell the clog is released. Then remove the plunger and flush a couple of times.
add water, plunger and push. repeat until cleared
I would suggest that you turn the water back on so that the toilet can fill up after you have plunged it.
But yes, plunge the toilet until the toilet flushes on its own. After the toilet has flushed on its own, give it a flush to make sure that everything is back to normal.
while the icky water is in the potty you just plunge it till the water goes down.
You could be filling it with too much paper or not flushing often enough, or putting sheets of handywipes down there or something that the potty doesn't like. Or there could be a plugging in the pipes or in the pipes out in the yard like from tree roots or sediment. Keep an eye on the clogging and if it gets worse call a plumber to fix it and if the problem can't be fixed then it's probably the county or city's problem.
Actually you you should use a plumbing snake to get the plug out,but you probably don't have one so go ahead an use a plunger on it and pay attention if any sound or water comes up anywhere else. If your toilet keeps getting plugged then your problems backing up literally and someone will have to come out and snake out the sewer line.
