Close the window on it. Measure a piece of wood from the top of the open window to the top of the window frame, and wedge it in.
the window shutting down on ac unit will do the job..no need to screw anything..I install ac units without doing any drilling...Thats simply overkill don't ya think?..Plus there are new units that can be purchased without the need to install in a window...Check them out..They are awesome..on wheels and can be moved from on room to another
The best way would be to install sheet metal angles on the inside of the canister and on the outside also. This would "sandwich" the unit into place without leaving permanent damage to the structure.
Note: Use short screws.
Newer a.c. units come with plastic coverings to help cover and insulate the open areas(this will leave in the window) and attach to the a.c. itself. the weight of the window will hold it down and for extra security or keep the window down, just cut a dowel or furring strip to go between the window(side to side) and this will aid in keeping all secure.
