To answer your question I would need to know what you are
trying to clean off the brick. Is it oil ,grease ,paint, crayons,
or just plain dirt. Without knowing what it is you need to remove it is impossible to give you the right answer.
Muriatic acid works best on brick, just use caution, plenty of ventilation, gloves and follow the directions exactly.
I guess it must not remove all types of mortar because I have used it many times with great success, it just smells really bad.
I used to use muriatic acid, but I found a non-toxic biodegradeable, non-fume product called Krud Kutter at the Lowes. I used it straight and it really cleaned up the soot with little effort and I had a lot of it because I had a chimney fire a few months ago so it was really black.
