How to make a round wood coffee table?
Question:I have never made a table but if I knew what materials to buy it would help. I do know how to assemble things but I just need some help
Answers:
You can actually buy the parts to build tables. I like a catalog called VanDyke's Restorer's, but I'm sure there are many sources--even probably Home Depot and Lowe's.
If you want to make it from scratch, buy a tabletop blank (can get at any store that sells lumber) so you don't have to join boards together. A blank is just a whole bunch of solid wood boards (probably pine) joined together to make a big sheet. It's different from plywood, because it is solid wood and not laminated sheets. Then cut the top into the shape you want with a jigsaw.
You will need some 1x3 lumber to build a frame to attach underneath the tabletop. That's what you'll attach the legs to.
I would buy the legs premade--unless you have a lathe handy and want to make them. Another option is to find an old coffee table at a yard sale and use the legs from that with the new top you'll make. In that case, you'll probably have to paint the table as the legs won't match.
When you finish your table, use a prestain conditioner if you'll be staining it, so that the table stains more evenly. Finish with a couple of coats of polyurethane to make it spill resistant. Good luck.
1 how big of a table do you want 2 you have to go to a lumber yard and find boards that are thick enough or you will have to laminate them together[ glue] 3 after you get them as thick as you want you need to find the center of the circle and drill a hole 1/4'' deep so it can turn and put it in the band saw and turn slowly in time you will have your circle try watching on TV o PBS A SHOW THE NEW YANKEE WORK SHOPPE norm will show you a lot and how to do it
