What are the best types of wood to use for hand drill friction firelighting?

Question:I've researched this and got alot of mixed views. Some say its better to use a hardwood base and softwood spindle, others say its the other way around. Which woods commonly found in the UK are best for this method? Pleases specify which for spindle and which for base. I dont want to know about bow and drill lighting.

Answers:
it should be made of the same kind of wood, or from the same family of woods. ... and move the bow back and forth vigorously, making the spindle spin

both the spindle and the base should be of a medium to close grained wood. most deciduous trees. avoid oak as it does not burn well at all. whatever wood you choose it has to be well dried and definitely no "green" wood. don't forget to cut your notch in the base wood for the embers to form and gather onto your tinder.
Willow or sycamore. Use same wood for both drill and hearth
