How do I remove a rotten fence post thats sunk 3 feet in the ground?

Question:I got about 1 foot of it removed. The opening I have to work with is 4"X 4" wide and is concrete sidewalk. I reeally don't want to break up the sidewalk if I don't have too. If I have to then so be it. The concrete is also at least 4" thick. Thanks

Ya gonna have to dig around it best ya can all the way around with like a big screw driver or crowbar. Two crowbars and try to pry it up little by little if ya can stick a spade type shovel and pry up. More then lickley it rotten and i doubt if ya take a big lag screw and screw that in and pry up on the screw head it'll just pull the screw out. Good luck and i know it a pain in the watoosey! hehehehe

Depends on how much time you have. There is a product called "Root Rot" that decomposes wood. You sprinkle on the pellets, cover the hole, and wa-la, 6 months later the wood is gone. If you want it gone now, uh, whew, I hate to suggest this, but gasoline poured in the hole and let it burn it out. Takes a while and it dangerous, but it's effective...
You could chop it off as far down as you can, drill holes into the centre, as many holes as you can down into it, and then bash the rest of it out with a chisle or crow bar or wrecking bar. Hope this helps : D
Take a chain and wrap around the post pull it tight, put a iron pry bar thru the chain and brace down and start pulling up a bit at a time.
lilabner has it right
After you put the chain on, jack it out with a car jack. You may have to put a short 2x4 between the jack and the post to compensate for the foot on the jack and have the pulling action plumb. If the chain slips, put a 3/8" lag screw on the opposite side from the jack.

I would think that whoever put the post in, poured some concrete in the hole to set the post. so, the concrete could be stuck to it. Using the jack, the foot will hold the sidewalk down and the tremedous lifting force will cause the poured concrete to slide down the post as the post comes out of the hole.

Good luck and happy jacking------
Use a drill extention to get you down as far as you need to go. Buy a drill bit that is really large that fits in your extention - it is best to buy these at the same time so you know the bit fits in the extention.
Drill many large holes in it then use that root rot the other responder mentioned.

If you can (which I'd check on this first) you may be able to burn it - let it soak up kerosene for a few hours then ignite it but this could burn for some time. You can alsways outten the flame by covering the opening and cutting off the air supply. Then continue again, I would think in a few days this would be reduced to ashes.
On the other hand if it really don't need to be pulled then just cover over it - cut it off level first.
Use your drill with a pretty large bit on it. Drill a bung of holes in the post and then dump some diesel fuel on it. Set it on fire and watch it burn. When it's all done just fill in the hole.
