Can I saw through a butcher block table?
Question:I have a large table top for a butcher block table. It's about 6 feet by 4 feet. I'd like to cut about 2 feet off of one end to make it about a square table. It'd be cutting across each of the "separate bloards" that make up the table. Bit I don't know what's inside that I might hit with my circular saw.
Can I safely cut through the butcher block and not hit anything or ruin the large part of the table that I want to use?
Answers:
the tape trick will work well to keep it from chipping, clamp a guide board to the tabletop so you cut it straight & use your skillsaw, you could also do it on a table saw if you have one of those to use. the butcher block is most likely sealed so make sure you seal the cut area again or it might crack.
Butcher block is usually solid wood. There shouldn't be any metal inside. Just make sure you have a sharp blade and take your time.
You need a table saw to run it through. Or else with your hand motion, it will get chipped. Unless you have an electrical saw and that you tape a line on both sides and cut on top of the tape very slowly.
If it is a real butcher block, it should be solid planks of wood only. Typically, they are made out of maple- which is WICKED hard. You may burn the blade or the wood, so cut slowly, with some allowance for final sanding.
Best of luck.
you sure can, i have done it. You just have to go slowly.
ask home depot they will tell you over the phone, that way your advise will come from an expert.
I was a furniture maker specializing in tables for a few years. I have made butcher block tables and cut butcher block tables. It should be solid wood, most likely a hard wood with tight grain such as maple, and it will not be easy to cut. Like other have said on here, it is easily done but SLOWLY. Give the saw time to do the work without burning up. Once you are done sand it and reseal with tung oil.
