I"m tiling kitchen and carpeting front room,( both concrete) but step from kitchen to front room is 1/2" lower

Question:Will it work out O.K.?

Answers:
it should be alright but if you feel like, you can add a divider between the tile and the carpet so it hides the difference in the level and it gives the impression of divided room.

Lay a piece of cork board just where they meet (carpet side) that will add quarter inch on and you won't notice it once carpeted!
You can even it up by laying and gluing Lan Flooring first.Luan is a thin material made out of wood which if used properly will compensate the difference.
Yes, it will all smooth out at the end. if you start in the middle of a room (pro's recommend this) then when you get to the un-even part it will be closer to the walls that is less noticeable.
Where the carpet meets the tile, you can use a wood or metal transition strip, and that shoul be fine, this is not that uncommon, also your carpet tack strip should make up a lot of the diffeance.
I second the "divider" advice as the quickest solution. The proper term is Threshhold. They're found at home improvement places like Home Depot and are made of Aluminum or Wood. Good luck
after you have got the tile adhesive and tiles down that should just about make up the half inch difference. but, when your carpet goes down there will be a difference again. you could get some quarter inch plywood sheeting and lay it down in your kitchen first and fix them with hammer plugs. or, you could just chisel away about 6inch of concrete away in you room,[about quarter of an inch deep] at the joining part. or you could put a self leveling screed down in the kitchen. but really the difference wont be too much to worry about
they sell shims for this. so the two floor meet more even.. check floor covering supply place. It makes a nice finish
once the tiling is finished and the carpet is down lay a metal runner across the threshold,
You can buy threshold strips specially designed to cater for a difference in floor levels of up to 13mm (or 1/2 inch if you prefer)

Here is an example of one :-

Flooring stores use a rubber Ramp to take care of this difference. it starts at 1/8" and goes up to what ever height you need. No problem its done all the time.
you can do a couple of things for this
you can trim the edge with a wood trim to seperate the two it will but up to the tile and at the same time overlap the edge of the carpet.
There will be a slight level difference, but I suggest you take advantage of the 1/2 inch difference to glue or nail down a sub floor and underlay for the carpeting. It will be kinder on the feet.
you can buy threshold strips ,that are designed for this,i know I've got one?
