Diatomaceous Earth kills cockroaches, ants, earwigs, silverfish, beetles, slugs, and other crawling insects. It is a mechanical insect killer that is not toxic or poisonous. Insects cannot become immune to its action. Insects come in contact or ingest this powder and die within 48 hours. It's non-toxic to pets and children.

Mix this with the boric acid, and it will be invincible to every bug on earth.

you have to get rid of their nesting places, which are dead dying wood, and if you have rot in your house that's included...they do not eat wood, they suck juices out of aphids and bugs and they nest in rotting wood, so they're a cardinal sign you may have a bigger problem
call an exterminator, they sprinkle a powder, then you have to sometimes tear open walls and vacuum out tens of thousands of them and their poop, or find their house in a dead log or firewood pile nearby
Best to call exterminator as they do ALOT of damage to a house. Best not to waste time. They like to make nests in drywall in basements etc.
Boric acid in powdered form gets rid of them. But you have rot somewhere. I'm not the first to tell you this, however, I am reinforcing some very good advice.
boric acid, mixed with water, then use a spary bottle and cover ares where they are visible, they will eat and bring back to the nesting area, and destroy the population, boric acid is available in powered form at any local hardware store
Carpenter ants often nest in trees...they favour damp and or rotting timber .if their in your house this may indicate you have some kind of moisture problem..probably best to get a pest controller (timber inspector )to check your house...i find insecticidal dusts work quite well
You should do a night time inspection of the home and yard to get an idea of where they are coming from. (12-4 am they are most active). This can be difficult, but getting some idea of where they are traveling to and from can help you solve the problem.
They could be in nearby trees, inside rotting wood in your home, outside wood piles etc.
They could be using your power lines and trees (touching your home), and plants touching the home, as a highway into your home, so you should look for that too and cut away any plant life touching your home.

Often times if you have many carpenter ants, it indicates you might have some water problem, as they are attracted to dampness. So check all plumbing (under sinks etc) for leaks, check your roofs, cleanout your gutters, and just generally look for wood in bad shape. Also if your basement has any water problems that would likely be contributing. Hopefully you don't have any serious water problems, but if you do likely you will not get rid of them until you solve it. (the pesticides will just be a short term solution until you fix a water issue, as if you don't fix the water problems they will just be back.). Often times if you fix the water problems, they will go away on their own.

As far as other treatments, you could do a spray treatment around the home (the cheaper repellent sprays are ok IF you are SURE the ants are not in your home, as if they have a nest inside it will just keep them inside. A non-repellent spray such as termidor is best for when you might have ants inside).

You can have an exterminator dust the walls & do other such treatments.

You can also use some baits such as maxforce and km-ant pro, but they only "help", will not solve it alone.
