This weekend I am building a gate for my privacy fence, anyone know any good web sites for how to on gates?
Question:It will built with the same wood as the the privacy fence.
Answers:
I know NOTHING about fences and gates but I do know that the library carries tons of how to books on things like that. I've checked out one on decking for my husband before and they're very helpful.
Fence lady here. Wood gates are not hard. But for a gate to last follow these rules. Never over 10 wide; that means a double gate 5' wide. You must have at least 2' of fence on either side. So that your gates don't sag it is best to use 4x6 posts at least 2' in the ground in concete. When you build the gate remember to get the proper hanges. If you can find them get Ameristar, they are the best for wood. They come in T hinge or the usual swing hinge. The fastener or the latch the best is the paddle latch made by ameristar but they do sell others that many do like but if your gate sags or the new woods is extremely wet when you put it up and it dries the distance will be too much for the latch to work propertly.
As far as the gate itself. Put up your wood fence where you are going to have your walk gate or double drive gate you need to have the proper posts. These need to setup before you hang the wood. Next, once you have put up the wood fence then frame out the gate with 2x4s remember to well brace the bottom section and the top section. Also remember if you don't use a good quality of wood, then the gate will twist. Without the braces it will do the same thing. Worldfencenews.com is a good source to find different types of fences, gates, and the ways to install it. Good luck.
We have a product here called Instagate. You get the 4 corners of a gate and you can make it whatever size you want. You cut 2X4's for width and again for height. Whatever size you want. The hinges are welded onto the two inside pieces and screws also come with it to attach the 2X4's to the metel parts. It's the easiest way to make a gate and they will not sag. I buy the at Totem Building Supplies up here.
