Install a new phone jack in a new room for DSL ??
Question:My townhouse only has 2 phone jacks in it one upstairs in the master bedroom and one in the kitchen. Our computer room, down the hall from the master bedroom is where I need a phone outlet. I am generally handy, but I have never messed with routing new wire through a house. It is about a distance of 20 feet about at opposite sides of the house. How do I install a phone jack in the computer room w/o having to pay a telephone guy over $100. HELP please !

I did mine and was surprised how easy it was. Where i am, i went to home depot and Lowe's they in the stores *How to do * books. I read them right there in the store without buying them. Then got one of the sales staff in the electrical dept to help make sure i was buying the correct cable, staples and phone jack. Trust me, check out the books and if you go thru attic be sure to purchase a *fish* tool to run the cable. Its easiest if you can run cable along baseboard.
Easy since phone companies only use 2 lines anymore, red and green, go buy whatever length PHONE cord you need, make sure it is round the flat stuff is stranded and wont help you much,, , look inside it, has yellow, black, red and green,, go to hardware store and get a dry wall box, one you dont need a stud to mount it, it has two tabs and uses the front of the box to clamp on the dry wall, just dont screw up cutting the box into the wall, the hardest part is where are you going to route the wire, on the floor or what,, buy a phone jack, it is labeled same, B,Y,R,G for the colors of the phone line,,, hope no one calls during this time, it can give you a jolt, LOL,,
I went to the library and checked out a book on diy telephone installation, after a little reading and about 3 hours (from getting the wires located in the wall and pulling them through to where I need them) I had my new phone line. You have to pull out another outlet in your house to see which wires are the existing ones. Red, Yellow, black and green are attached to the 4 connectors and two other multi colored wires are what you are looking for. attach them in the same order and you should be ok. you have to be very careful with the wires, they are small and you have to strip them carefully without breaking the wire.
if you have a basement thats open drill up through the wall in the basement to the floor that you want to go to. and while you ae doing it put them in all your rooms or if yu have cable internet get a cordless phone and a wireless router for the rest of your house.
