Which Laminate Flooring is easiest to lay. Many say B&Q. Is that true?
Question:What about laminates from Wickes, Homebase and Focus?
I like one design from Wickes but a builder once told me that its rubbish and it takes forever to lay. Anyone with any information?
Answers:
There are several different types of laminate flooring and they are sold via many of the high street diy stores. So the short answer is that it depends on the type of flooring rather than the store they are purchased from.
In my experience it is very much as case of what sort of experience you have at laying flooring, click together is some times a real pain to put together. However glue together required extra equipment to hold the laminates together as the glue dries.
Yeah! B&Q is OK but if you want the easiest stuff to lay - get to your nearest IKEA store.
I have laid many laminate floors and I have to say the Ikea stuff is by far the best and easiest to lay. It is also slightly cheaper and the pack contains a better SQ MTR coverage for your money - it is less prone to chipping when cutting, which is also a bonus!
I think, depending on where you are in the country, you can now order online for home delivery. http://www.ikea.co.uk
You won't be disappointed - every person I have laid an Ikea Laminate floor for - has been impressed!
I last laid one for a friend and an 18' x 13' room took less than 5 hours to lay.
i have layed several laminate floors and have found the glue free click together types are all pretty similar so would advise that the criteria you use is whats the easiest and most convenient place that suits you to get it from. B&Q fine as far as i am concerned.
they are all easy to lay these days, the click type are very easy indeed.
A common mistake people make is when going round doors. - cut the artitrave to the right height and put the laminate under it.
Also a good tip is to remove and skirting boards before you lay, especially if they are the small type. The job will look much better.
Don't forget to cut the bottoms of the doors off so they can open properly.
The stuff from wickes is fine, well within the abilitys of a keen diyer if you are unsure have a play around with it in store they usually have a loose display
It does not matter where you get it from really. It all depends on what you buy. The click fix flooring is the easiest and less messy. But the glue fix holds marginally better and are more water resistant (in case you spill something) but it is messy and timely.
You will need to buy a fixing kit consisting of spacers and a hammering bar/block so you do not damage the boards when you tap them in place. - costs around £5.00.
As someone else has suggested, if you can carefully prise off your skirting boards and then re-fit them over the top of the laminate flooring to hide the edging. You have to leave a 5-10mm gap around the eges to allow for expansion.
The only problem with this is that if the carpenter has used Gripfill or other resin to fix the skirting in place then you could pull off the plaster and open up another can of worms.
The alternative would be to use a special beading which you can buy now to match the laminate and buy a cheap mitre saw and carefully cut your mitres.
I have bought laminate flooring from B&Q and found it easy to lay, can't comment on the others though.
Don't buy the cheapest you see, you will end up paying more in the long run and will take longer.
Have fun
I picked mine up from howdens joinery. Dead easy to lay and has been down for years now and still looks like i've only just fitted it. I'm going to get some more soon for the conservatory.
They are all about the same. Go with what you like.

buy it at any shop as b+q or like me from floorstogo, BUT for easy laying=
1.click system
2. never the cheapest!
3. the thicker the board the better 7-9mm etc.
4.use good underlay
5.look at the guarantee guide - the longer, the better-minimum 15 years as less start to chip etc. and you will end ripping it out and layin+ paying again!
6.if you want a laying guide contact me!
All the click laminates are easy to lay but make sure the floor you are covering is level before you buy.
what ever type you choose, remember to leave a 5mm gap off the walls for expansion all round. if you remove your skirting, after installing your floor the skirting will cover the expansion joint. if you dont remove the skirting... still leave a gap and you can put a peice of trim over the gap.
good luck
