How do I find the beam in my apartment?

Question:I just brought a peerless universal tv mount and i have no idea where to hang it or where to start..someone help please

Answers:
Go to a place like Home Depot or Lowes or where ever and buy just a cheap stud finder and run it over the walls and it will locate the studs for you. Your looking for studs and not a beam, If you need more help feel free to contact me. Good luck ( PS: the stud finder will have directions with it when you buy it)

Go to HomeDepot > Tools section. Find someone there and ask them to show you a Stud Finder. Its a little device that you can slide along the wall, and it will beep when it finds a beam or a stud behind the drywall. Slide it around the beeping spot back and forth to get a sense of the dimensions. Mark the edges with a pencil, put a screw in the middle.
You can either buy a studfinder at any local hardware store in the tools section. If so, just turn it on mark on one side with a pencil where it detect the edge then on the other side where it detects the edge. Then put a dot about halfway inbetween the two edge dots you made and that is where you want to hang the tv mount.

The other way you can do it if you don't want to buy a studfinder is to tap on the wall with your knuckle or lightly with a hammer till you hear a higher pitched thud. Where you hear a higher pitched thud that is where the stud is. You'll want to tap back and forth across the area to kind of get a good sense where the stud is. It's a little more inaccurate than the studfinder but it does work.
What they have all said. Then if that isn't exactly where you want to hang the TV, here is what we did. We got a piece of inch thick plywood cut to match the mounting bracket. Screwed that into the stud at the edge of the plywood. Then mounted the bracket to the board. That way we were able to put it in a better place and not limited to being right on a stud. I hope this makes since to you.
If you do not know the difference between a stud, and a beam, you should probably hire out the job. You don't want your brand new expensive T.V. shattered on the floor, and a hole in the wall to boot. The cost of the installation is insignificant compared to the cost of a new T.V.
Listen to Don.

If your apartment has metal studs, you could be in trouble. Hire this one out. It should cost about $40 or so and you will not have to worry about your TV.
